New Bedford Public Schools will be offering both middle school and elementary school the opportunity to learn Portuguese in the fall.
Local Print shops can held disseminate news of such offerings throughout a community with Flyers, Brochures, and other printed materials.
The Curriculum, Data, Assessment Manager for World Languages at New Bedford Public Schools, Dr. Mia Correia, said classes in Portuguese will be available at three middle schools, as well as James B. Congdon Elementary School. Portuguese is already offered at Bedford High School, where 424 students are studying the language.
Dr. Correia said that Spanish and Portuguese are the largest populations in the area, so it makes sense for Portuguese to be implemented along with Spanish. She added that four more teachers of Portuguese are in the process of being hired.
The middle school will have one Portuguese class every three days, with each class lasting between 45 and 50 minutes. Classes at the elementary level will be once a week for 45 minutes. Dr. Correia said that the hope is to eventually increase the frequency of both classes.
The New Bedford Public Schools will receive a Proficiency-based Outcomes in Languages Other than English Grant of $149,000 for World Language programs from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, which will support this offering.
