New Bedford to host programs on Portuguese-American culture

Two immersive cultural programs will be presented this spring by the New Bedford Whaling Museum as part of its Portuguese and Lusophone-World Lecture Series.

Such programs can be promoted throughout a community with poster printing.

The first will be a screening of “Malassada Day.” This is a documentary about the cultural significance of this Portuguese treat that is loved by many. Michael Benevides, cultural advocate and vice president of Portugalia Marketplace; a culinary expert and host of Maria’s Portuguese Table, Maria Lawton; and director Dante Bellini, Jr. will lead a panel discussion after the film and explore the connections between community, family, food, and faith. This film will be on Thursday, March 20, beginning at 6:00 p.m.

The second program will focus on the cultural ties between the Azores and New Bedford. State Representative Antonio F. D. Cabral will open the program, which will be followed by the release of a new book by Joel Silveira Avila. This will be followed by a screening of “The Last Azorean Whalemen.” This is a short documentary relating the stories of the last whalemen from the islands of Faial and Pico in the Azores. Lastly, there will be a panel discussion led by a first-generation Azorean American, Sara da Silva Quintal, who will provide additional understanding of these cultural connections.

This program will be on Thursday, April 17, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
