The city of New Bedford is looking to develop the Whaling City Golf Course, which is owned by the city, into an Advanced Manufacturing Campus.
It is seeking feedback from developers in the community, and a Request for Information is now available online.
The RFI includes several new elements that came after the city refined its strategy with this project. It will now allow for a phased approach so that the project will develop the 37 acres over a period of time. Activity on the property for the development will no longer be required to be in sequence with any upgrades to the golf course. The city is committing to preserving the golf course and ensuring that any development will have minimal impact on it.
The site comprises 94.5 acres, of which 73 acres are suitable for development, and it can host as many as 1,000 workers and accommodate close to one million square feet of new development, while allowing the adjacent golf course to be operational.
News of such developments and their potential benefits for a community are often made known throughout a city with flyer printing.
Mayor Jon Mitchell said that there are many competitive advantages to the proposed site and that it is ideal for development. He noted that there is a regional airport less than a mile away, it is at the intersection of two major highways, and it has direct access to freight rail line.
