New Bedford now has a brand new program for those interested in a career in emergency medical services (EMS).
Jon Mitchell, mayor of New Bedford, said that the New Bedford EMT Training Academy offers instruction both in the classroom and hands-on. Lasting 180 hours, it will prepare students for the certification test required by the state, followed by a career that is rewarding and in-demand. The city said that a wide range of topics is covered in the academy, and includes EMS operations, first aid, physiology, and anatomy. Students will also accompany paramedics and EMTs and can engage in fieldwork.
There are currently four students in the inaugural class. Michael Thomas, director of New Bedford EMT, said that there seems to be a great deal of interest in the city in this program. Poster printing can be used to further spread the word throughout a city and surrounding communities about such new programs and include more information about topics covered. The program costs $1,350 with a discount for residents of New Bedford. Sessions can be attended both during the day and in the evening.
The mayor commented that medical first responders and EMTs from New Bedford are making a difference in the daily lives of residents. He said they help comfort family members who are concerned in cases of emergency, and administer aid that can save the lives of individuals.
