The North Terminal Extension Project in New Bedford has been completed.
This project is on 10.5 acres of terminal space and provides 965 linear feet of bulkhead, dredged to 23 feet. Banner printing is often used at such sites to inform residents of the completion of such important projects.
The project took six years to complete at a cost of $42.7 million and received funds from the federal government in 2018 that amounted to $15 million. Additional funding was provided by the city of New Bedford, the New Bedford Port Authority, the Massachusetts Seaport Economic Council, MassWorks Infrastructure, and the Massachusetts Dredging program.
Gordon Carr, Executive Director of the New Bedford Port Authority, said that proposals for development in the area will be sought later this year. He expects that the facility will have multiple uses in the future. He added that it has already been heavily used for commercial fishing and that that will most likely continue along with other uses such as offshore wind operations and maintenance and marine construction.
Mayor Jon Mitchell said that the project has also benefitted as New Bedford became the first Superfund site in America which was a designation given to it by the Environmental Protection Agency in the early 1980s. He said that the site would not have been built without that designation.
