World War II museum commemorates Pearl Harbor

In order to commemorate the 74th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, the Museum of World War II in Natick is holding a special exhibit of artifacts from the Hawaiian location that are of a rare nature.

The founder and executive director of the Museum, Kenneth Rendell, has a collection of personal equipment of pilots, the first account in a newspaper (The Honolulu Star-Bulletin) of the attack, items from the USS Arizona, and pieces of Japanese planes shot down over Pearl Harbor, among other items.

A spokesperson from the Museum said that the most impressive thing in the collection is the original telegram that warned the United States Navy that the attack was imminent. Lt. Cmdr. Logan Ramsey, Commander Aircraft, Scouting Force, sent the telegram to all Navy ships in the area of Hawaii warning that the raid was not a drill. Also in the collection is the formal declaration of war on the United States by Japan.

There are more than 70,000 artifacts and 500,000 documents and photographs from World War II in the collection, making it the most comprehensive of its kind in the world.

The Museum may be turning to a local print company to help with printing flyers and other materials promoting this special exhibit, as well as the unique collection of other artifacts it has collected from that period.
