Natick commuter rail station upgrades near completion
Construction on the MBTA Station at Natick Center is almost finished.
This work is designed to make the station more accessible and now has new stairs and elevators, with the pedestrian bridge waiting to be finished.
The project cost $40 million and added high-level platforms to make boarding more accessible, in addition to new ramps, stairways, and elevators. There has been replacement of the pedestrian bridge, but it is not open yet as a part still needs to be delivered. Additional upgrades have included signage, storage for bicycles, emergency lighting, enhanced security systems, digital and audible communications systems, upgraded drainage infrastructure, and new canopies.
An extension of the Cochituate Rail Trail is also part of the project to allow for easy access for commuters. The extension will connect Route 27 to a space that is 570 feet long and will include bicycle racks.
Local print shops can provide more detailed information about such updates and their benefits with brochures, flyers, and other printed materials.
Morgan Griffiths, Natick Transportation and Economic Planner, said that the Natick Center MBTA station is one of the commuter rail stations in the system, such that meeting requirements of accessibility was necessary. He added that it is hoped that a more functional rail station that is accessible to all people will attract more people to the MetroWest area.
The work on the pedestrian bridge is expected to be completed next month.
