Former Sergeant Ryan Pitts of the United States Army, who is a Medal of Honor recipient, will be at the 2019 Veterans Appreciation Dinner in Natick next month.
Pitts was awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery by President Barack Obama for a firefight in 2008 in Afghanistan.
During an assault in Kunar Province by anti-Afghan forces on July 13, 2008, Pitts was severely wounded. As his legs and arms were wounded by shrapnel, Pitts continued to fight and defend an observation post against an enemy of 200 fighters for another two hours, which was enough time for the arrival of reinforcements.
Although Sergeant Pitts was unable to stand on his own due the severity of his wounds, he continued his military duties until there was a two-man reinforcement team at his side.
Sergeant Pitts will discuss his experiences in the Army and this particular encounter in Afghanistan. The dinner will take place on Monday, November 11 at fire department headquarters in Natick beginning at 6:00 pm. Events such as this one are often promoted and made known to the community through flyer printing, especially if they a highlighting somebody’s story.
Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP no later than Wednesday, November 6. They can do this by calling (508) 647 6545 or emailing pcarew@natickma.org.
