Railroad tracks in Milford, Hopedale, and Bellingham have been purchased by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). These tracks extend beyond its Franklin/Foxboro commuter rail line, which ends at the Forge Park station.
A portion of the Franklin Industrial Track and the Milford Secondary Line have been purchased by the MBTA. This track runs from Franklin to Central Street in Milford. The purchase was from CSX, a national railroad.
This purchase, coming in at $13m, means that the MBTA no longer will need to lease the track between Forge Park and Franklin Station, which will save the transit authority money over the long term. The purchase is equivalent to seven years of lease payments.
State Representative Brain Murray said the purchase is part of the Capital Investment Plan of the MBTA for fiscal years 2023 through 2027. The plan was that the agency would buy the track to ensure that the Franklin commuter rail line was maintained through Forge Park in Franklin.
Print shops often play a role in disseminating news of such a purchase and its benefits for travelers.
The transaction between CSX and the MBTA was completed so that the MBTA would avoid any more rent or lease payments on the tracks. The transaction also stipulates that the MBTA needs to create a layover area to replace the somewhat undersized one in Franklin.
