The Special Olympics Massachusetts Natick School Day Games, held annually by the Natick Public Schools, takes place today.
The community track and field event was first held in 2009, with close to 400 unified partners and student athletes expected to participate from Crossroads Schools, ACCEPT Collaborative, and the Natick Public Schools.
Unified sports bring students together with and without disabilities by the means of sports. Students in these sports learn to have mutual respect for those with different abilities and talents in a team. They also protect teamwork, and encourage inclusion and acceptance in the schools. In preparing for this day, students have been working together as teammates in the hopes of bringing home bronze, silver and gold medals.
In addition, over 125 members of the community and students and staff from Natick High School will be volunteering at the event. It will have all the pageantry like the Special Olympics with a torch run, an opening ceremony, music, participation by the Fire and Police Departments of Natick, and attendees in the stands who will root for the athletes.
The event runs today from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm, at the track at Natick High School.
