What's Happening in Natick, MA…

New small electronics repair store opens in Natick

The Natick area is looking to help consumers with the repair of their small electronics with new initiatives.

The first is the opening of a new uBreakiFix store in the shopping plaza on Route 9. The store focuses on quick fixes to electronics such as video game consoles, smartphones, computers, and speakers. This is the second store in the chain to open in the area recently. Stores exist in Westborough, Hudson, Needham, and Dedham, and a location in Milford opened in August.

Local print shops often create flyers to assist in spreading the word about such new stores and their services. Justin Wetherill started the concept in Florida in 2009 as he was looking for a way to fix a cracked screen on his smartphone. There are now over 700 locations of the chain.

A larger social movement is also underway to urge customers to fix their electronic devices rather than discard them. There are chapters of the Repair Café organization around the world with ones in Westborough, Bolton, and Sudbury where people meet to get tips about fixing electronic devices and appliances and get free tools. There are also expert volunteers who have repair skills in all kinds of fields. The first Repair Café was opened by Martine Postma in 2009 in the Dutch capital Amsterdam.

Setting up a Repair Café in the town of Natick has been discussed by the Natick Sustainability Committee.
