New rail trail in Natick to create scenic route

Construction is currently underway on the section of the Cochituate Rail Trail in Natick.

The entire project is expected to cost $12.4m, paid for with both state and federal funds, and is being run by the state. It will stretch from North Main Street in Natick to the Framingham line. The path will be paved with a grass shoulder two feet wide on each side. The CSX bridge over Route 9 will be rebuilt, as a new overpass over Route 30 will also be constructed to connect to a section of the trail in Framingham. This will create a spur line that will connect to Speen Street at the Natick Mall. Print shops are often hired to create maps with the routes of such trails.

The foundations and approaches for these bridges and overpasses were completed over the summer. A new retaining wall over the Keystone Arch has also been finished, and work on grading the landscape over the course of trails continues.

Among the destinations along the trail are the Natick Mall, Lake Cochituate State Park, a new campus for Mathworks, and the Natick Soldier Systems Center. There are also over 1,000 housing units that have been recently been constructed or permitted.

This section of the rail trail, which is 2.4 miles long, is expected to be completed by June of next year.
