New dog park to launch in Natick

The first fenced-in dog park in Natick, and one of just a handful in the area, will open this spring.

There some areas designated for off-leash use at Callahan State Park in Framingham, and fenced-in parks in Medway and Needham, but these have restrictions on their use.

The dog park is near the parking lot at Middlesex path on West Central Street. Funding for the park came from the fundraising efforts of the Fun Informed Dog Owners of Natick (FIDO) and a $200,000 grant from the Stanton Foundation. The Natick Conservation Commission is the landlord of the park.

FIDO is instructing dog owners on use of the park for their pets. The group is teaching owners about proper behavior and staying up to date on licenses and shots. Co-chair of the organization, Kelly McPherson, said that it is important that dog owners understand how dogs should behave in such enclosed spaces and will also be taught about how to clean up after their dog.

Such organizations often turn to flyer printing to provide more detailed information about uses of such parks and general rules and regulations.

McPherson said that the park could open next month if the weather is mild for the rest of the winter season. Fences are still being installed and landscape work is being finished.
