A social space for families and children impacted by autism and an autism training center for businesses will be coming to Natick Mall. It will be run by a human services non-profit organization based in Framingham called Advocates.
The Autism Welcoming Center from the Advocates Autism Alliance Program will span 2,700 square feet. Among its offerings will be support groups, guest speakers, and school vacation and after school activities. It will have activity space and serve as hub for training for businesses looking t obtain Autism Welcoming certification to make their establishments more accessible and inviting for those with autism.
Advocates received the space as a donation and the Natick Mall renovated it with funding provided by the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services and the Nancy Lurie Marks Family Foundation, a non-profit based in Wellesley that supports those with autism.
Banner printing is often used at such sites to inform residents of such new services coming to a community.
Senior vice president for strategic planning at Advocates, Jeff Keilson, said that the kindness and generosity of the management and ownership of the Natick has made the center possible that will provide resources and support for the community. He added that there will be greater accessibility for business and families to the Autism Welcoming program which will help to build awareness of autism and sensory sensitivities.
