Natick receives funds for safe spaces

Funds in the amount of $25,000 from the Shared Streets and Spaces Program have been awarded to the town of Natick.

The Shared Streets and Spaces Program is a new initiative developed by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation in partnership with the Barr Foundation. It provides capital and technical assistance to help cities and towns design and implement project spaces that allow for physical distancing while helping in the reopening and economic recovery process, and strives to make communities more resilient for the future. These projects are short-term in that October 9 is the deadline by which they need to be mostly or completely implemented.

Natick is among the first dozen towns and cities receiving these funds. It will use this money to create temporary outdoor areas for dining on parking and driving lanes and sidewalks. Print shops can be hired to create Signs and other postings to designate such spaces. The funds will also be used to implement safety measures for pedestrians that encourage bicycling and walking to and around downtown, and slow traffic speeds using planters, metal pedestrian fences, and similar materials.

The federal government will also be giving the town about $300,000 that will be used as grants for certain small businesses. The town plans to offer grants of $10,000 to those businesses with five or fewer employees.
