Natick plans new downtown building concept

Additional common areas and retail space have been added to the existing plans for a new building at 1 South Main Street in Natick.

To be called The Block, the development will have food and retail spaces and will feature local art. There will now be a food hall on the second floor and more fluid retail concepts that will create seasonal opportunities. There will also be more retail space on the second floor, as what was once a roof deck designed as a common area will be enclosed. The developer, Stuart Rothman, is thinking about applying this “little village” concept to other communities. Developers can turn to local Print shops to help promote such concepts in neighboring cities and towns.

A member of the development team and head of school at Walnut Hill School for the Arts, Antonio Viva, said that the additional retail space will allow for different combinations of cultural programs, eateries, and retailers to create a space that is always changing. Viva added that he believes this will draw people to downtown Natick as well as the MetroWest area.

Sarallyn Keller, a member of the Design Review Board, said that this project has long-term benefits for the community and will become an important building in the downtown area. The Planning Board has approved these changes and the project is now awaiting approval from the Building Department.
