Natick looks to revitalize its downtown

Recently, planners from Natick unveiled a proposed recommendation for the town center that would improve amenities for pedestrians, lead to new efforts to support businesses, and facilitate the creation of new homes.

Over the past few months, feedback from about 1,000 people, an assessment of Natick Center and surrounding areas, and work done by the staff of the council were all used to develop these recommendations.

According to Chris Kuschel of the Metropolitan Area Planning Council, when people were asked about what they would like Natick Center to look like in the next five, ten, and twenty years, they said they wanted both shops and homes in the downtown, but single-family homes outside the main part of town.

People also said they wanted more restaurants and a grocery store. Analysis of the market showed a potential for nine restaurants or other eateries and additional office space.

As a result, planners recommended a mixed-use zoning area in the downtown, but limiting building heights that were closer to the residential areas so that there would be a transition from the taller buildings in the area. They also recommended helping businesses to work with property owners to improve Signs and façades, and collaborate on events to bring more customers to the downtown.

Local Print companies could be brought in at this point to create Flyers and other materials to promote these events, and highlight the many other changes to the downtown.
