It was recently announced by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics that MathWorks, based in Natick, will be the sponsor of a significant national math modeling competition for high school students. The company has supported this competition in the past by offering software licenses at no charge to students who participate.
To be renamed the MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge, the contest is designed for high school students to help them develop an interest in mathematical thinking, and consider becoming engineers and scientists. In the past 12 years of its existence, there have been 37,000 students participating from 4,000 high schools, 5,000 teachers involved, and 400 judges with doctoral degrees. It has also awarded more than $1.2m in scholarships.
Registration for the competition is free and opens this month. The challenge itself will take place from March 2 to March 5, 2018. Each year, $100,000 is given out in scholarships.
The contest is internet-based and high school students who are juniors and seniors will be given an open-ended real-world problem. The students will have 14 consecutive hours to work on the problem and analyze, develop, and provide their unique insight on it.
Poster printing companies can be hired to create pieces that can be displayed in schools throughout the country, so that students can become aware of and decide to participate in competitions like this one.
