Funding approved for new middle school in Natick

Natick Town Meeting recently approved funding for the construction of a new Kennedy Middle School. The building will be 182,000 square feet in size and should hold 1,000 students.

The project is estimated to cost almost $110m. About a third ($37m) of that amount will be contributed by the Massachusetts School Building Authority, meaning the town will need to fund the remainder.

At the annual town election later this month, voters will be asked to approve to fund the project through a debt exclusion, so that property taxes can be raised temporarily to collect additional money to pay for such capital projects.

The current building was built in 1965 and is deteriorating. The science labs are in need of an update, and it now accommodates close to 100 more students than its original design intended.

The new building would be energy efficient and have a four-story academic core. The first two levels would be occupied by the lower grades, with the third and fourth floors occupied by the upper grades.

Teachers will have spaces for collaboration in the core, with an athletic center, a performing arts auditorium seating 500, and a fitness centre on either side of the core.

Such techniques as poster printing are often used to make announcements to the community regarding expected opening dates.
