Framingham home to new MWRTA facility

A grand opening celebration for the new “bus hub” of the MetroWest Regional Transit Authority (MWRTA) was recently held in Framingham.

According to Senator Karen Spilka, the MetroWest Regional Transit Authority was formed in 2006 to fill a hole in accessibility to public transportation in the MetroWest area. The new facility is state-of-the-art and shows how far public transportation has come in the area, Spilka adds.

The new facility is for maintenance and operations. It will also provide a central reservations and mobility management call center and programs for commercial driver’s licenses and compressed natural gas.

The cost was approximately $12m. State funding worth $3m came from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and the remaining $9m was federally funded.

Today, bus and paratransit service are offered by the MWRTA, serving 15 communities including Natick, Dover, Ashland, and Hopkinton.

Eventually the bus hub will be open to the public and the new facility will allow for the consolidation of both fixed route and paratransit services under one location.

Congresswoman Katherine Clark commented that it will enable students at Framingham State and Regis College and commuters to be connected to jobs, families, and world class health care facilities in downtown Boston.

The MWRTA could use postcard printing to create Postcards with a few pictures and bullet points about the facility to send to people in the local community about the new facility.
