Southgate to hold wreath laying ceremony for veterans

The annual Wreaths Across America event will be celebrated at the Evergreen Cemetery in Southgate next month. Festive holiday wreaths will be laid at veterans’ grave sites who are buried in the cemetery.

The event is being spearheaded by the John R. Little VFW in Southgate and the Campbell County Democrats. It will begin at 8:30 am with coffee and doughnuts at the VFW, followed by the placement of wreaths in the cemetery. At 9:30 am, Soldiers’ Lot will be holding a dedication ceremony.

At this nonpolitical and nonpartisan tribute, the graves of 448 veterans from the Soldiers’ Lot and the Civil War Battery will receive wreaths laid by volunteers. Veterans who are buried in Evergreen Cemetery fought in the Spanish-American War, the Civil War, the two World Wars, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. One of the more notable graves is that of William Horsfall, of Newport, who was the youngest Medal of Honor recipient in the country.

Volunteers are needed to help place the wreaths. Poster printing can be used at scouting and other youth organizations to encourage young people to participate in such events. Donations are also being accepted for the wreaths, which cost $15 each. Organizational sponsors are also being sought for the event.

The wreath laying will take place on Saturday, December 14.
