Southgate dances in street at block party

The Southgate Volunteer Fire Department is putting their annual fundraising celebration. The Block Party will provide lots of food and entertainment to help raise money for firefighting equipment.

The party will feature live music through the whole evening performed by local band Brandy’s Lipstick. Additionally, food and beverages both alcoholic and non-alcoholic will be sold at the event. Games will also be offered up for interested visitors such as the big six wheel, children’s games and activities, and the infamous Turtle Races. Some small trophies and prizes will be awarded to the winners, but the biggest draw to participating is the bragging rights.

Although there will be a charge for concessions and to play in the games, the marketing services for the party stress that any funds raised are secondary to the social aspect of the evening. It’s meant to be less of a festival and more of a party, with friends and neighbors hanging out and having a good time together. It is, however, one of the few fundraisers the volunteer fire department depends on to afford the much-needed equipment that can’t be purchased on the city budget alone.

The Southgate Volunteer Fire Department will be held on July 16 from 5:30 to 11:30 p.m. at the Southgate Fire Department at 128 Electric Ave. Anyone interested in the cost of concessions or any other information should contact the fire department directly.
