Southgate is a city which is named after the Richard Southgate family. Southgate was born in New York City and from Richmond, Virginia, arrives in Newport in 1795. Just two years later, he was granted a license to practice law in Kentucky and in 1798, became the Commonwealth Attorney for Campbell County. He later became State Representative and Senator before he died in 1957. Law ran in the family with his son becoming Northern Kentucky US Congressman. Officially it opened in 1971 and the management who had opened it then remain to this day. Just five years later, there had been several additions made with service areas, corridors, and a myriad of function rooms. Unfortunately, one of the most deadliest nightclub fires in the history of the country occurred here on Memorial Day weekend in 1977 with more than 200 injured and 165 deaths.
