Work on the KY 9 expansion project’s northern section will soon begin, and the $8.7m project will enhance regional connectivity and thereby assist Southgate businesses in attracting customers and residents in their commute to work.
The three-phase project is to provide a new corridor connecting the Taylor Southgate Bridge and Fifth Street. The soon-to-begin second phase will include a roundabout at the end of the Fourth Street/Veteran’s Bridge. A second roundabout will be placed at the Taylor Southgate Bridge, at the Newport on the Levee end. The low-bid contract for the second phase was awarded to Prus Construction Company, which is based in Cincinnati.
The project will impact a variety of annual events and will necessitate the judicious use of Print companies to ensure the public is aware of changes to the Thanksgiving Day Race, as well as the Flying Pig Marathon courses.
Although the second section is set to begin soon, the first section, an alignment between the Ninth and 12th street, is still in progress and is anticipated to be completed this fall. The finished road will feature two lanes in each direction, and will include bike lanes, sidewalks, and limited on-street parking. The third phase, which should begin in 2017, is the middle section of the project and will tie all sections together.
