Italianfest was recently held in Newport, a city sufficiently close to Southgate that many from that community are sure to have stopped by the annual event.
Italianfest ran from Thursday, June 7 through Sunday, June 10. Opening ceremonies were held on Thursday and featured over the four days was a bocce ball tournament at Pompilio’s. As the winning city over the past two years of this competition, Newport was not able to participate in the tournament, so the crown for this year was won by Cold Spring.
Attendees were able to stroll along the riverfront of Newport between the Taylor-Southgate and Purple People bridges, enjoying live music and authentic Italian food. Among the restaurants that participated in the festival were Royal Roman Roadhouse, Tony’s Italian Sausage, Newport Pizza, and Alfio’s.
Performers from the old country and across the United States entertained the crowd. The performers included Pete Wagner Orchestra, Moreno Fruzzetti, Tre Bella, and Revolver. Awards were also given out during the entertainment to several honored Italian Americans.
Attendees at the festival were also able to participate in rides, games, and a golf outing. There was also a family photo booth that featured Italian families from the local community.
