Genre-melding instrumentalist to perform in northern Kentucky

Valerie June, a player of many instruments, recently announced her tour dates for 2019 and will be coming to Newport, no doubt encouraging many Southgate to travel the short distance to see her performance.

Known as the Astral Plane Solo Tour, the tour is scheduled to start in Charlotte, North Carolina on February 5. She is working on her new album and will be performing new songs as well as some of her classic ones. Her sound is a combination of rock and roll and rhythm and blues, and has been influenced by her upbringing from Western Tennessee.

Her music career began when she moved to Memphis at the age of 18, when she was the lead vocalist for Bella Sun, a band she and her husband at the time, Michael Joyner, created. When the band split up, she taught herself guitar and worked three jobs so she could save enough money to continue writing and performing her own music. After an illness which set her back financially and in her career, she set up a Kickstarter campaign to create her first album, based on her life’s struggles.

June will be performing at The Southgate House Revival in Newport on May 1. Organizers of such special performances often use flyer printing to encourage people from both local and more distant communities to attend.
