Debutante ball focusing on building confidence held in Newport

The debutante ball was recently held in Northern Kentucky at Newport High School and was attended by many in the area, including Southgate.

Tracy Stokes, an active member of the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky region, organizes this event to help build confidence in young women and to have fun as part of her endeavor known as PEARLS, which stands for Purposely Educating and Responsibly Leading Young Sisters. Its mission is to target girls between the ages of 12 and 18 among underrepresented groups and help them to develop their potential.

Stokes had five young women in her group shopping for dresses, dancing in them, and practicing their entrances. Stokes said they had been practicing for three months. They were presented, had dinner, and then attended the dance. The goal was to make them feel special.

Stokes plans on continuing her work by writing a book about the program and expanding it at Northern Kentucky University, and working on funding opportunities while still partnering with high schools in the area. She wants to make PEARLS a non-profit organization, which would enable her to apply for grants.
