Richmond sandwich shop steps up to help injured firefighter

With a name like Firehouse Subs, it's no wonder the owner of a local sandwich shop decided to raise funds to support a local firefighter last week.

On July 10, the sandwich shop, located on Barnes Mill Road, donated 20% of sales to Derek Hahn, a firefight the Richmond Fire Department for around five years. The fundraiser lasted from the minute the shop opened until it closed at 10:00 pm.

In June, Hahn and his family lost their home after a spark from Hahn's car caused it to explode. The explosion spread to the home, destroying it.

To spread the word about the fundraiser, the manager of Firehouse Subs, Matt Roe, used flyer printing. Roe told WKYT:

"[We’ve] been handing out fliers all over town just really trying to get a good turn out to raise money for him and his family."

Hahn's fellow firefighters rallied around him, popping into the sandwich shop to order throughout the day. State troopers and the sheriff's deputies also stepped up and ordered a few subs. In the end, the fundraiser was a success and the sub shop was able to raise nearly $1,000 for Hahn, his wife, and his young son.

The Hahns were able to stop by the sandwich shop at lunchtime. They told WKYT that they were thankful for all the help they received in the weeks after the fire.
