Richmond residents honored at awards banquet

Every year, a group of Richmond area residents are recognized for their actions in the community and efforts to make the area around them better. This year's annual Achievement Awards Banquet, which took place at the end of October, recognized several ‘firsts’.

Two decades ago, James Turner became the first African-American firefighter in Madison County. Russell Glover, the organizer of the awards banquet, has wanted to recognize Turner's contributions for a while now and finally got the chance this year.

Speaking to the Richmond Register, Turner said he was happy to receive the award. His advice for young people is to approach any job with a good attitude.

Organizers of annual award ceremonies and banquets can use Stationery printers to create the awards and programs for the event, announcing who will be recognized. Also recognized at the Achievement Awards Banquet was Martha Miller, who was the first African-American Circuit Court Clerk in Kentucky. Miller was appointed to the role in February of 2018. Before that, she was a chief deputy clerk, and has been working in the clerk's office for more than 40 years in total.

The Rev. Robert Blythe was also recognized. As the first African-American to be elected to the government of Richmond City, Rev. Blythe has served as city commissioner for 16 years. Joslyn Olinger Glover, the first African-American woman to practice law in Madison County, also received an award.
