University of Kentucky brings on the art in Lexington

Lexington is about to get ‘Art in Unlikely Places’. Thanks to a group of students from the University of Kentucky (UK), a newly-fromed group is focused on bringing inspiration and hope to city residents through art.

Through a grant from the Michael Braun Endowment Fund and with the help of a Kickstarter funding campaign, 17 students in the university’s arts administration program founded ‘Art in Unlikely Places’. The group is now ready to launch its first project, ‘Future Doors’. While nonprofit agencies routinely seek the help of brochure printers to communicate messages of encouragement and success, the Future Doors project takes a different approach to change, based on a simple concept - visual art has the power to challenge and alter an individual’s perspective.

To realize the project’s concept, local artists were engaged. Their task was to create works of art on the doors of eight participating nonprofit agencies in the Lexington area. Each organization selected serves a clientele drawn primarily from neighborhoods that have been underserved. The door art will be representative of the organization’s mission and symbolic of hope.

Mark Rabideau, Director of Undergraduate Studies for the UK Arts Administration program, is enthusiastic about this initial project sponsored by the newly formed project, and spoke of how it could empower young people to drive change for the better.
