The Arboretum of Lexington now open

The Arboretum of Lexington has reopened. The rose gardens, fragrance garden, home demonstration garden, and Flight 5191 Memorial are all open to the public.

The Memorial Rose Garden has an extensive collection of roses, a stone wall, rose covered pergolas, cobble stone walkways and in the center a steel sculpture called Flight 5191. This statue of steel birds in flight symbolizes the lives lost in Flight 5191.

Next to Memorial Rose Garden, the Modern Rose Garden is where new varieties of roses are tested, and new methods of gardening tried. The Fragrance Garden has a small bridge, climbing roses, lavender, fruit trees and winding trails. There are herbs and plants known for their scent in this garden.

The Home Demonstration Gardens is four acres of smaller gardens with different themes. It has a city garden, iris display, pollinator garden, vegetable garden, cottage garden, herb garden, pond garden, ornamental grasses and woodland shade garden.

The Arboretum of Lexington has developed an online virtual tour called Walk Across Kentucky. This video displays native plants from seven different locations in Kentucky. It shows many of the diverse native plants in Kentucky.

The hours the arboretum is open are Monday-Friday noon – dusk and Saturday and Sunday dawn – dusk. The park will observe social distancing practices. The restroom and water fountain are closed.
