Sports field receives county's approval

Sayre School is one step closer to being able to expand its sports fields.

Sayre School’s plan to expand the field located at Athens Boonesboro Road in Lexington will require multiple steps. The school got through its most recent hurdle when the Urban County Planning Commission voted in favor of approving a change to local ordinances. This change makes it possible for a weight room to be constructed indoors, and for outdoor lights and speakers to be used.

The change also means that the school can increase the space of its indoor floor plans to 10,000 square feet, or two percent of the lot's total size, depending on which is greater. The school’s athletics field currently sits on a plot of 50 acres that is made up of four fields for lacrosse and soccer, a diamond for softball and baseball, a cross-country course, and 10 tennis courts. High school athletics teams tend to have their own logo designs.

Nick Nicholson, a representative for Sayre School, commented in a statement that:

“We want to create a year-round training room, weight room for our students. It is an indoor-outdoor facility. It is not an elaborate training facility.”

Before the school can proceed with its plans, the Lexington-Fayette Urban City Council has to approve the amendment. If the council gives its approval, Sayre will be required to put in applications for conditional use of the facilities and outdoor lighting.
