Lexington hosts State Little League tournament after 40 years

After an absence of four decades, the Kentucky State Little League Tournament made its long-awaited return to Lexington this month.

Cardinal Run Park in Lexington welcomed 24 teams from three age divisions for a thrilling five-day tournament of baseball. With teams coming from Morehead, Lexington Paintsville, Bowling Green, Corbin, and more, Nathan Lowe, the Bluegrass Little League President, said it took many hours of preparation to get ready for the tournament. Organizing a successful tournament includes arranging accommodations for visiting families, creating a well-planned schedule, and ensuring pristine playing conditions across all fields in Lexington. Lowe explained:

“It’s the premier Little Leagues tournament that’s held every year. It’s all about making sure the kids have the best experience possible, something they can remember, and then have them pay it forward once they become adults.”

The 10-year-olds’ championship was won by Morehead, while the 11-year-olds’ and 12-year-olds’ events were won by teams from Eastern.

The state of Kentucky comprises pf seven baseball districts, taking turns to host the annual tournament. However, Lexington, situated in District 3, has missed out on being a host city for some time during its rotation.

Lowe aspires for the young participants to gain invaluable life lessons from this unique experience, transcending mere wins and losses.
