A $3.5m project is planned, and includes a makeover at the current North Lexington YMCA facility and construction of a new building to serve residents and businesses in the Hamburg corridor. The North Lexington YMCA facility opened in 2000 on land originally donated by Lexmark. Now, the company has made another $1.5m matching gift for the YMCA’s current initiatives.
Expansion of the North Lexington building includes another 3,500 square feet of health and wellness space, plus room to accommodate separate locker rooms for adults and adults with children. Additional program space will also be added for the Y’s healthy living programs and an exterior “face lift” will provide more windows and glass front to take greater advantage of natural light.
The YMCA scheduled for Hamburg includes a warm water pool, youth arcade, a lap pool, locker room, child care facilities, gymnasium, and indoor track.
David Martorano, president and C.E.O. of the YMCA of Central Kentucky, referencing the new Bluegrass Community & Technical College on Newtown Pike as an example, noted the expansion made sense.
"For us, it's about the exciting things that are happening in the north side corridor."
Jeri Isbell, Lexmark's vice president of human resources, said:
"We want to see the upgrades happen. We bring customers and employees, and we want to show them how vibrant Lexington is."
