Gurnee to handle Zion's emergency calls

In a deal that will cover the next five years, Gurnee has agreed to take over as the dispatching agency for emergency calls for fire and police in Zion.

Several suburbs have been consolidating their dispatching services since Illinois passed a law in 2015 saying communities must have at least 25,000 residents before a 911 operation can be instituted there.

Talks between Gurnee and Zion started in April 2016. Kristina Kovarik, Gurnee's mayor, praised the work village employees from the fire, police, finance, and information systems departments put in on the issue, which resulted in the agreement that Zion approved earlier in December.

Gurnee will receive a prorated share of $875,000, which is the base fee for the first year for dispatching emergency calls. The money covers the period July 1, 2017 through April 30, 2018. The contract will cover the period May 1 through April 30 for the four subsequent years.

Zion officials say they believe Gurnee will hire six or seven of their dispatchers. Zion is also required to put approximately $160,000 into a fund that will be managed jointly with Gurnee for the new operation.

Municipalities like this can benefit if officials work with a flyer printing company, which can devise informative mailers for residents impacted by the new system.

The agreement will go into effect July 1, 2017, and officials say it will be benefit both communities financially.
