Gurnee Fire Department receives grant
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recently supplied a grant to the Gurnee Fire Department.
The department received a $45,182 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) from the agency. The funds will be used to purchase battery-operated extrication devices that will be supplied to the department's ladder truck, as well as its heavy rescue truck. Adding the devices to the trucks will bring the department into compliance with increased professional standards adopted by both the fire protection industry, and the government. The equipment will help promote the safety and health of both Gurnee citizens, and the firefighters who protect them.
John Kavanagh, the fire chief, said the department was grateful for FEMA's support. The new equipment will enable firefighters to maximize their response to the emergencies that occur within Gurnee, neighboring communities, and the Warren-Waukegan Fire Protection District. The devices will help firefighters save lives when the only option is extrication. Flyer printing can be used to create notices that inform people of changes like this to agencies that protect them.
FEMA officials say the AFG program's main goal is to make both the public and the firefighters safer in emergencies by giving eligible fire departments the direct financial assistance they need. This is a one-time grant that will enable the department to operate more safely by purchasing additional specialized equipment, including spreaders, rams, and cutters.
