Barrington is planning to implement its new program with reserved parking will start in less than two months.
The new parking permits, which have been available since May, are considered premium, and allow commuters to park closest to the Metra station in the village. They cost $1,200 per space per year and are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
According to the Marketing, Communications, and Events Director of Barrington Patty Dowd Schmitz, the village has sold nearly 60 spots. Barrington residents made up 21 of the spots while commuters from unincorporated nearby communities made up 13.
The first applicants have been given their zones and spaces using a lottery system. Guidelines require cars to be in the spaces on Monday through Friday by 9:30am. If not, they are free to use by everyone but commuters who have a premium permit that arrive late can still park on the lot.
Premium spaces also require a deposit of $120. The rest of the balance is due by September 15 or the space becomes available to purchase for others. The spaces are available for purchase on Barrington's government website.
Officials at Metra do not know if additional communities have premium parking spots. Around 90 spaces are predicted to be sold but may change by demand. The program will take affect starting October 1.
Print shops can create parking permits in bulk that are easy to see displayed inside cars.
