Limited recycling event planned for Northern Cook County

Barrington is one of the communities eligible to go to a document destruction and electronic recycling event this weekend.

Those living in areas included in the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County can attend the parking lot at 151 Hastings Road behind Banner Plumbing to dispose of important papers and old electronics.

Other than Barrington and South Barrington, the participating SWANCC communities are Arlington Heights, Elk Grove Village, Glencoe, Hoffman Estates, Kenilworth, Morton Grove, Niles, Park Ridge, Rolling Meadows, Wilmette, Evanston, Glenview, Inverness, Lincolnwood, Mount Prospect, Palatine, Prospect Heights, Skokie, Wheeling, and Winnetka. Residents not part of those communities will not be allowed to participate, and volunteers will verify addresses with ID Checks.

Electronics need to be out of their Boxes with the plastic Packaging removed. Items with harmful materials such as batteries, air conditioners, refrigerators and microwaves will not be accepted. According to the director of Recycling and Education for SWANCC Mary Allen, there is an additional special program to help residents recycle these products.

For dropping off paper, residents will stay in their cars and hand their documents to workers, which will then be cross-shredded there. Many Print shops use recycled paper from a mill like the one that will accept these shredded documents. Each vehicle can bring up to six paper Bags or file containers of documents with the fasteners removed.

The event starts at 9:00 am this Saturday, September 14, continuing until noon.
