First National Merit Scholarship winners announced

Last Wednesday, the Corporation for The National Merit Scholarship (NMSC) disclosed the first winners for the 2019 scholarships available. Multiple students were from high schools in nearby Palatine.

The local high school seniors were some of the 1,000 students chosen for the awards. They are sponsored by several corporations, business organizations, and company foundations. Within the next few months, the NMSC will disclose more winners.

According to a new release, the corporate-sponsored scholarship’s award prizes are diverse. Students can win $500-$10,000 yearly stipends, or $2,500-$5,000 prizes. Each winner was part of a finalist group and qualified according to those who sponsored them for the scholarship. Some students had parents who worked for the company or lived in a community that relied on the company's services. Others intended to go to college for a sponsor-desired major or career.

Barrington resident Martin Michalski is one of the winners; he goes to William Fremd High School and plans to have a career in electrical engineering through the Motorola Solutions National Merit Scholarship. Lydia Shinyoung Hahm is also from Fremd High School and received the National Merit Scholarship sponsored by the Pepsico Foundation.

The rest of the winners will be announced on May 8, June 5, and July 15. There are 7,600 total scholarship winners and a total of $31m in prizes this year. A banner printing business can help congratulate the winning students and make a banner to display in the school.
