Nampa university to offer mental health training course

Employees at the College of Western Idaho (CWI) in Nampa can take a class in February to learn about mental health.

CWI Employee Mental Health First Aid Training is a course that teaches university staff members how to properly respond to mental illnesses. The program will educate participants on the right way to help people who are developing mental health problems. Attendees will also learn about assisting those with addictions. The course will have at least seven participants, and the first portion of the program will be held online.

The training course is from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing and was created in 2001. The class is based on Mental Health First Aid Australia, which was a program developed by Betty Kitchener and Anthony Jorm. There are several professional advisors who help the course with its research, such as Dr. David Albright, Dr. Olga Price, and Dr. Patricia Haynes. The program has also trained well-known individuals like Michelle Obama.

The mental health first aid class will be held on Friday, February 2nd from 9:00am to 5:00pm. There is no cost for university staff members to sign up for the program, though registration is mandatory. Colleges hosting training sessions similar to this may use brochure printing to give their participants educational materials that they can bring home.
