Roswell welcomes Southern Aquatics

Roswell residents who want to learn about their fish, stock an aquarium, or find rare species of fish now have a store designed just for them.

Southern Aquatics opened recently in Roswell, with sisters Taylor Burre and Ashley Burre Hilburn, who have loved fish since they were little girls, as co-owners.

The store has not yet had its grand opening, but the sisters put out a sign they hoped would generate interest, only to find people coming to talk to them about the problems they were having with their fish. Hilburn said they believed they had have several weeks to get ready to open, but people started coming to the store almost immediately.

Southern Aquatics comprises 3,000 square feet, which gives the sisters room to offer both saltwater and freshwater fish, especially uncommon species not carried by larger retailers.

However, they go far beyond selling aquariums and fish to fill them—they also educate their customers about the fish they are buying, including any problems that might arise. Hilburn says they “handhold” their customers, because they want the fish in their home aquariums to have healthy lives. They follow through with this philosophy by buying fish only from trusted local suppliers in order to promote sustainability.

The sisters could create Brochures describing their fish, and giving tips on maintaining healthy aquariums, and distribute them at the store.
