Under the proposals, the new green would run from City Hall down to Georgia 9. Landscaped to best suit the local area, the early designs presented by local brochure printers show a water feature being included at one end of the green.
The Faces of War Memorial, often the focus for local events, would also be moved from its present site to the northern end of the green.
The $6.4m plans outlined also include the creation of an amphitheater, a public meeting area and a number of retail spaces.
The spokesman for the Downtown Development Authority (DDA), Monica Hagewood, said the costs would be met in a private/public partnership, with the financial benefits to the town clear for all to see.
Presenting the DDA plans, Ms. Hagewood said:
"We believe it will attract a lot of retail and other uses along the Ga. 9 corridor. There are phenomenal opportunities.
"By building this green, we are bringing a $14 million investment to the city."
There are still some issues with regards to the relocation of the Faces of War Memorial and the existing trees, which would need to be removed under the plans. However, early meetings with local residents have generally proved positive.
