Local sculptor tasked with MLK statue creation

A statue of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is being commissioned for the Georgia Capitol grounds, and Governor Nathan Deal announced that McDonough sculptor Andy Davis has been chosen to create it.

According to a June 29 announcement, The King statue will occupy a spot on the Capitol grounds where a statue of Tom Watson once stood. Dr. King’s statue will be in the ground’s northeast quadrant and overlooking Liberty Plaza.

In his announcement Governor Deal included the following:

“Placing a statue of Dr. King at the Capitol of his home state is a long overdue honor."

Davis began his full-time sculpting career in 1999 and works out of the Andy Davis Studio at the McDonough Hood Street Art Center. Thanks to the services provided by a catalog printing company, prospective clients can become familiar with his work and appreciate the details included in each statue.

His past works cover everything from a Georgia Police Memorial, to Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-A. Patrick Henry, General Lawrence Griffin (who founded Griffin County) have also been the subjects of his statues, and Davis is responsible for the Ray Charles statue commissioned by Albany, Georgia, the singer’s hometown.

Each of these sculptures has no doubt been immortalized by a postcard printing service, as will likely be the case with Dr. King’s when it is finished.
