Marietta theater to piece together Proof

The Atlanta area has a new theater company, and it is beginning its career with one of the most popular dramas of recent years.

The new Merely Players company, founded by Joanie McElroy, has chosen the prizewinning play ‘Proof’ as its maiden showing.

In David Auburn's acclaimed work, the action centers on a mathematical proof developed by a renowned genius who struggled with mental illness. After his death, his daughter Catherine, also a brilliant scholar, seeks to validate her father's discovery, but has to contend with her unsympathetic sister. As well as this, one of her father's students may be trying to claim the proof as his own. The play explores these relationships, as well as Catherine’s growing fear that she too may be mentally ill.

Merely Players might like to work with a banner printing company for a colorful piece to decorate the theater in honor of this inaugural production.

Proof runs for eight performances, from January 8-18, 2015, Thursdays through Sundays at the Out of Box Theater, located in the Artisan Resource Center in Marietta, at 585 Cobb Parkway South. Curtain times for the Thursday through Saturday performances are 8:00 pm, with Sunday matinees at 3:00 pm. Tickets are $15 for general admission, and $12 for seniors and students. Tickets are available at the Out of Box website, or at the box office.
