This Memorial Day weekend, Marietta will have a race and a Military Appreciation Celebration hosted by American Legion 29.
Rain or shine, the Veterans’ Memorial 5K Race will take place on Saturday morning, May 25. The 5K will kick off at 7:30 am. The 1K run/walk will be a family-friendly event beginning at 8:30 am that will precede a Tot Trot at 8:45 am. All skills levels are invited and the race will be chip-timed.
Participants will receive T-Shirts with the event’s graphic design on them. Phantom runners (those not actually running) can sign up for $20 and still receive a shirt. Georgia National Guard will have runners that can be sponsored also. These runners will not only be here in the Marietta race but running at the same time in Afghanistan and Iraq. Those who pledge more than $100 will receive a Committee Golf shirt.
Race packets and tees may be picked up May 23 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm and May 24 from 9:00 am until noon at Post 29, 921 Gresham Avenue NE.
Proceeds will go to the Georgia National Guard Family Support Foundation, The Shepherd Center’s SHARE Military Initiative and the Post 29 Veterans’ Assistance Fund.
Later that morning after the race there will be a free Military Appreciation Celebration in Marietta Square at Glover Park, 50 North Park Street from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm. The Georgia Symphony Orchestra will give a concert of patriotic music.
