Growth and development
As is often the case, it was the arrival of the railroad that led to the founding of the town of Lutz. The Tampa Northern Railroad built a small depot here, and later the U.S. Postal Service authorized the establishment of a post office in the community. The growing town was centered around the depot, and was given the name Lutz in honor of W.P. Lutz, who had brought the railroad to the area.
Lutz continued to grow as people moved to the rural area from Tampa, until there was no need for ‘Lutz Junction’, which was torn down late in the 1960s. However, in honor of the early history of the community, a replica depot was constructed approximately where the original stood.
In addition, the original post office is still extant, though it now functions as an art gallery, and the public library is behind the replica of the train station. This area of the community is called ‘Beautiful Downtown Lutz’. Hollywood visits and weird cacti
Lutz has also been part of the entertainment world, since some scenes from the film ‘Edward Scissorhands’, starring Johnny Depp, were filmed in the Carpenter's Run neighborhood of Lutz.
Also of note is the fact the community has earned the strange nickname ‘Cactus Hat’, thanks to a sudden growth of the cactus known as Cleistocactus in 2003. The explosive growth of the cacti has never been satisfactorily explained, but the plants can still be seen around the town.
City officials might consider working with a flyer printing company to create a handout for visitors that includes descriptions of the locations used in the film, as well as where to find the unusual cacti. They could include a map as well.
Shopping, dining, and playing
Lutz is home to a number of small businesses, many of which have been here for years. Since Tampa is less than 15 miles away, Lutz residents have the opportunity to visit shopping malls in the city, which is easy to reach via U.S. 41.
Lutz also hosts a number of restaurants, including Italian, Thai, Mexican, and Chinese, with all of them small independent businesses. There are also chain restaurants available.
