Largo fire rescue team comes out on top

The Extrication Team of Largo Fire Rescue at the TERC North American Vehicle Rescue Challenge earned an impressive array of awards at a recent event.

Among the awards was the first place overall title, and the event took place on Long Island in New York over the course of a weekend.

There were three distinct challenges at the event, each of which tested the speed, skills, and precision of the team.

The Limited scenario, which was 20 minutes long and did not allow for the use of hydraulic tools, showcased the resourcefulness and ingenuity of the team.

The Unlimited scenario, which was also 20 minutes long, enabled all tools to be used, and gave the team a chance to demonstrate their mastery as they successfully extricated a person with minor injuries from a vehicle.

A Rapid extrication, lasting 10 minutes, was the final challenge, where the team was able to highlight their ability to perform under pressure as they extricated someone who was severely injured.

Individual team member responsibilities were also evaluated in categories such as incident command, technical, and medical. They placed first in both the Limited and Unlimited events, and second place in the Rapid event.

Firefighter Spencer VanBuskirk won first place as Medic and firefighter Billy Stark won first place Incident Commander.
