Indigo dyeing can be used to prepare clothing, accessories and home decor, and anyone who has always wanted to give the practice a try but was unsure how to get started may appreciate an upcoming Washington area class.
The Indigo Dyeing workshop arranged by Artistic Artifacts in Alexandria will provide a basic introduction to this method of coloring textiles. The registration fee is $75.00 each, and it will run for four hours.
The class will be set up so that it takes place outdoors, and it is intended for ages 18 and up. There is room for up to eight learners, and they will prepare an assortment of dyed fabrics they can then use for their own projects. It was requested that everyone brings along only natural materials for this activity, as indigo will not work with synthetics. Several different techniques will be shared, and the registration fee includes supplies as well as the use of an indigo dye vat that will be premixed for the occasion and one yard of prepared cotton fabric.
A hands-on class gives the public a chance to add some new skills to their own personal toolbox. Printed instructions and other handouts for an activity can be crafted by area Stationery printers.
This opportunity for area crafters and anyone else who would like to get started at indigo dyeing to learn how to do so will begin at 10:30 am on June 3. The venue can be found at 4750 Eisenhower Avenue.
