Russian festival returns to Norwich

Holy New Martyrs Church in Norwich recently hosted the yearly Russian Festival.

Those who attended enjoyed a cultural Russian experience for what was the 20th year for the festival, which included nesting dolls, foods like pysanky (Ukrainian Easter eggs) and borsch (beetroot soup), storytelling, and egg decorating. The eggs were decorated with hot wax in a traditional Ukrainian method.

According to Mary Tague, a member of the planning committee for the festival, the event is the biggest of the year. More than 350 vehicles filled the parking lot last year.

Tague said it takes months of preparation and cooking food for days to put on the festival. There was a bounce house, vendors, traditional Russian items, and a book sale, as well as a wide range of food to try.

Greeting everyone was Richard Tarryk, who played his accordion before performing for those eating the Eastern European delicacies of pierogis and kielbasa. Tarryk said he has played the instrument for about 65 years, adding that the music aids the festival's cultural environment.

The bake sale sold breads, pies, cakes, and other Russian treats wrapped in cellophane and topped with ribbons. Blueberry coffee cake and apple pies were popular items, but piroshky (fried dough) and baklava (sweet pastries) were favorites.

To add to the cultural aspect, printing companies familiar with the culture and language often create tags for sold at multinational events.
