Purple Heart parking spaces to be created in Griswold

Veterans who have been awarded the Purple Heart are getting their own parking spaces at the Griswold Veterens Memorial Park near Norwich.

The town may also add one at Sheldon Road's Pasquale & Maria Camputaro Memorial Field.

Phil Flowers went to the Board of Selectman to ask for the spaces at the Memorial Park, Town Hall, and the Senior Center. The latter buildings do not have enough spots to fulfill his request, but the town will consider putting the special parking spaces at other areas.

Flowers intends to fund the Signs, expected to cost around $100 each. He was inspired by the same spaces he saw at Wal-Mart and buildings in California and Massachusetts. The goal is for the Signs to spread to nearby towns and they will inspire others like they did with Flowers. Betty Knox, who served in the Air Force and lives in Griswold, loves the idea and thinks they should be open to all veterans.

Those wounded in combat receive the Purple Heart. If they die from their wounds, the award is given to a relative. Flower's father was given a Purple Heart after the Vietnam War. This is a great opportunity for a sign printing company, as it could give them free advertising, and if other towns adopt the idea, they can go to the same printing company.
